Hans Vangsø (Born 1950)  is a renowned Danish ceramicist who works from his workshop in Knebel in Mols. He was educated at the Jutland Academy of Fine Arts in Aarhus, where he was taught by the renowned ceramicist Gutte Eriksen, who became an important mentor. Hans Vangsø is particularly known for combining traditional Japanese ceramics with Nordic minimalism, which is reflected in both the form and glaze of his works.
His style is characterized by simplicity of form and a rich texture in the glaze. He uses experimental firing techniques, where he fires his works several times in self-built gas kilns, often with the addition of materials such as seaweed, metals and newspapers to create unique surfaces. These processes give his ceramic works a raw, almost alchemical expression, where the randomness of nature plays a central role.
Vangsø has exhibited his works widely, both in Denmark and internationally, and his monumental jars and textured surfaces have been admired by collectors and ceramic enthusiasts worldwide. His works draw on both the Danish "Jyske School" and the Japanese ceramic tradition, giving them a particularly robust elegance and an timeless expression. For Vangsø, ceramics are not just about creating beautiful objects, but about conveying a deeper connection between the material and the craftsmanship. This makes his works both strong and present, rooted in tradition, but with a clear contemporary touch.
