Morten Løbner Espersen (Born 1965) is one of the most significant Danish ceramicists of his generation. Educated at both Denmark's Design School in Copenhagen and École Duperré in Paris, he has worked for more than 30 years to explore the possibilities of ceramics, especially through his favorite object: the jar. Espersen is known for bringing a new energy to ceramic art, and his works often balance between the simple and the complex in both form and surface.
A central part of his work is glaze experiments, where he explores the many effects the glazes can create on various ceramic shapes, such as cylinders and spherical jars such as "Moon Jar." His works often undergo multiple burnings and layers upon layers of glaze, creating dramatic and tactile surfaces that vary from shiny to raw and structured. Espersen's works are often described as being a balance between "triumpf and catastrophe" due to the unpredictability that occurs in the expressions of the glazes after firing.
Espersen has exhibited his works in major international collections and museums, including Designmuseum Denmark, the National Museum in Stockholm and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. He has also been part of several important exhibitions, such as "Triumph & Catastrophe" at the CLAY Ceramics Museum in Middelfart and the Art Museum Den Haag.
His unique approach to the material makes him one of the most influential potters of modern times, where he continues to push the boundaries of what ceramic art can be.
